The Pursuit of Freedom
What does freedom look like?
Free to be
Freedom to show up...authentically
Freedom to be vulnerable
Freedom from our assumptions about ourselves, the world, and others
Freedom from fear of failure
Freedom from our egos
Freedom to love and be loved
Freedom to listen
Freedom to speak
We all really want to be free. We want to feel free to be creative. We want to live our fullest lives, at our fullest capacities, and as our fullest selves.
So how do we create spaces for freedom through our leadership?
Oprah once said that the one question that everyone she has ever interviewed always asks afterwards, in some way shape or form, is “was that ok?” In other words, “Was I ok? Am I enough?” As humans we often need that constant assurance that we are enough. How do we free ourselves from that need and simply know that we are enough?
The truth is that there is fear in freedom. With freedom comes so many opportunities; opportunities to thrive and opportunities to fail. What if we honored our failures as lessons and, more importantly, afforded ourselves grace in those moments. What if in those moments of failure we chose not to lose sight of our own humanity. Part of being human means that we are going to make mistakes. Freedom means embracing, loving, and accepting all parts of our humanity. When we come to fully understand that a life worth living is not void of breakdowns and disappointments, then perhaps we can stop pursuing freedom and actually live in it!
